Flag of Bahamas

FLAG GUIDE

Flag of Bahamas

North America

Flag origins

The Bahamas has horizontal aquamarine-yellow-aquamarine bands with a black triangle pointing inward from the hoist. Aquamarine represents the surrounding Caribbean and Atlantic waters. Yellow symbolizes sunshine and sandy beaches. Black represents the people’s unity, strength and determination; the forward-pointing triangle also evokes their shared effort to move the nation forward. The flag was adopted on July 10, 1973, at independence from Britain.

Flag story

The flag emerged from a public competition before independence. Rather than selecting one finished entry unchanged, the final design is said to have combined strong elements from several proposals, making it difficult to attribute to just one designer. The Bahamas is an island country of more than seven hundred islands and cays. Its aquamarine is deliberately more specific than a generic blue, recalling the bright waters associated with the country.
