Crosses on flags: Nordic and central crosses

Compare Denmark, Finland and Switzerland, distinguishing position, color, historical evidence and legend.

Flags to compare

Images are for comparing designs. Standardized display boxes may not preserve actual flag proportions; consult the official sources for precise shapes and colors.

The off-center Nordic cross

Denmark and Finland place the vertical part of the cross toward the hoist. With the hoist on the left, the intersection is left of center and the horizontal arm extends farther to the right.

Denmark has white on red, Finland blue on white. Shared structure does not mean shared colors; combine pattern and color clues.

Reading Denmark’s famous legend

Danish official accounts recount the legend of the Dannebrog falling from the sky during a battle in present-day Estonia in 1219. They present it as a legend.

A memorable story can help recall, but its date is not equivalent to a documented legal adoption date. Separate law, contemporary records and tradition.

Switzerland’s separate central cross

Switzerland has a square red national flag with a central white cross whose arms do not reach the edges. This differs from the edge-to-edge bands of Nordic crosses even when colors are identical.

Our comparison images use standardized display boxes. Consult official sources for the flag’s exact outline and proportions; the website image box is not necessarily the physical flag’s shape.

A cross does not determine a region

A cross question identifies a visible pattern; it does not by itself establish a religion or region. Combine it with colors and geography. The Union Jack also combines multiple crosses.

After revealing the answer, describe the intersection’s position, whether the arms reach the edges, and the background and cross colors. These concrete comparisons are more useful than memorizing a name alone.
