FLAG OBSERVATION
Reading tricolors: direction and color order
Compare France, Italy, Germany and Sierra Leone, connecting bands and color order with history and deduction.
Flags to compare
Images are for comparing designs. Standardized display boxes may not preserve actual flag proportions; consult the official sources for precise shapes and colors.
Three colors are only the beginning
France has blue, white and red vertical bands; Italy green, white and red. Germany has black, red and gold horizontal bands, while Sierra Leone has green, white and blue. Remember direction and order together, not just the number three.
Tricolor describes a composition. A flag with three main bands and a coat of arms may contain more than three visible color groups. Band count and the game’s color count are different things.
France: colors shaped by revolution
The French presidency connects blue and red with Paris and white with the king, explaining the tricolor through the French Revolution. Seeing city and national symbols combined makes the design easier to remember.
Do not apply one interpretation to every flag. White does not always mean peace, nor red always blood. Check each country’s own historical sources.
Italy: look at the hoist
The Italian presidency traces the national tricolor to Reggio Emilia on 7 January 1797. Beside France, the key difference is the hoist band: green rather than blue. Look left rather than only at the center.
These descriptions assume a flag viewed from the front, with its hoist on the left. A reverse-side or mirrored photograph changes left and right; compare images in a consistent orientation.
Combine color with direction
Blue or green helps separate France and Italy. Red or black helps separate Germany and Sierra Leone. First establish vertical or horizontal stripes, then check individual colors.
There is no fixed question about the exact order of bands. Use color and pattern questions during play, then study the order in the flag guide. Explain the different color and where it appears in your own words.
Questions to try
- Is blue or light blue used?
- Is green used?
- Check the direction with horizontal- or vertical-stripe questions.

France and Italy share white and red. What is the other color, and where is it?
Show the answer and explanation
Viewed from the front with the hoist on the left, France has blue at the left and Italy green. Both have white centrally and red at the right.
