Flag of Kazakhstan

Asia

Flag origins

Kazakhstan's sky-blue flag has a golden sun and steppe eagle, with a traditional ornamental band at the hoist. Designed by Shaken Niyazbekov and adopted on 4 June 1992, blue conveys honesty, loyalty, integrity, peace and unity, as well as Turkic traditions of the sky. The sun represents life, energy and abundance; its thirty-two grain-shaped rays evoke prosperity. The eagle expresses strength, independence, generosity and aspiration.

Flag story

The 1992 competition considered hundreds of designs before selecting Niyazbekov's. Eagle imagery also connects the flag with the long history of hunting with golden eagles in the steppe. The ornamental strip is part of the design's cultural identity, not just a decorative border.
