FLAG GUIDE
Flag of Kyrgyzstan
Asia
Flag origins
Kyrgyzstan's red flag displays a golden sun with forty rays and a red tunduk, the circular roof opening of a traditional yurt. Adopted on 3 March 1992, it links red with courage and the banner of the epic hero Manas, gold with peace and wealth, and the forty rays with the unity of forty tribes. Looking through the tunduk evokes home and shared belonging.
Flag story
In December 2023, the sun's curved rays were changed to straight ones. Critics of the old design thought it resembled a sunflower. The government presented the revision as a clearer rendering of the sun rather than a change to the flag's basic symbolism.
