FLAG GUIDE

Flag of Kenya

Africa

Flag origins

Kenya's flag has black, red and green horizontal bands, narrow white borders beside the red band, and a traditional shield over two crossed spears. Black represents the people, red the blood shed in the struggle for independence, green the land and white peace. The shield and spears express the defense of freedom. The flag was adopted at independence on 12 December 1963.

Flag story

Its black, red and green came from the Kenya African National Union's party flag. White stripes and the shield and spears helped turn that political design into a national flag. The central shield is associated with Maasai culture and is a particularly useful identifying feature in the game.
