FLAG GUIDE
Flag of Equatorial Guinea
Africa
Flag origins
Equatorial Guinea’s flag has green-white-red horizontal bands, a blue triangle at the hoist and central arms. Government explanations link green with forests, white with peace, red with independence fighters’ blood and blue with the sea connecting mainland and islands. The arms show a tree and six six-pointed stars representing the country’s territories and islands. The motto UNIDAD, PAZ, JUSTICIA means Unity, Peace, Justice.
Flag story
The tree is generally identified as a kapok or ceiba. Tradition links it to a nineteenth-century agreement signed beneath a large ceiba between Spanish representatives and a local ruler. Equatorial Guinea is unusual among African states in having Spanish as an official language, a legacy of colonial rule that ended with independence on October 12, 1968. Despite the name, the equator does not cross its mainland, Río Muni, which lies to the north. Some island territory extends south of the equator.
