FLAG GUIDE
Flag of Namibia
Africa
Flag origins
Namibia's flag divides blue and green fields with a white-edged red diagonal band and places a golden twelve-rayed sun at the upper hoist. The Constitution specifies straight rays. Officially, blue represents sky, Atlantic resources, rain and water; red the people's courage and determination to build equal opportunity; white peace and unity; green plants and agriculture; and the sun life and energy. Gold also evokes warmth, plains and the Namib Desert. The flag accompanied independence on 21 March 1990.
Flag story
Namibia takes its name from the Namib Desert, whose color is explicitly reflected in the flag's gold. The flag contains no animals or plants, but the national arms do: an African fish eagle, two oryx and the remarkable desert plant Welwitschia. The flag and arms should not be confused when answering questions.
