FLAG GUIDE

Flag of Seychelles

Africa

Flag origins

Seychelles' flag has blue, yellow, red, white and green rays spreading from the lower hoist. Designed by Philippe Uzice and adopted after a national competition in 1996, it is the third design since independence. Blue represents sky and sea, yellow the life-giving sun, red unity and enthusiasm, white peace and social justice, and green the natural environment. The spreading bands express dynamism and development.

Flag story

The first independence flag appeared in June 1976, but a coup brought a red, white and green replacement in 1977. After multiparty government and the 1993 Constitution, a new competition produced the present design in June 1996. Its colorful appearance reflects a new political era, not simply a decorative tropical theme.
