Flag of Solomon Islands

FLAG GUIDE

Flag of Solomon Islands

Oceania

Flag origins

Solomon Islands' flag has blue above and green below a yellow diagonal band, with five white stars on blue. Adopted in 1977, it continued after independence on 7 July 1978. Blue generally represents sea and water, green land and vegetation, and yellow sunshine. The five stars refer to major divisions at adoption, not today's nine provinces and Honiara.

Flag story

The name Solomon Islands arose from sixteenth-century Spanish exploration by Alvaro de Mendana and expectations that reported gold might connect the islands with the biblical King Solomon's wealth. It does not mean that Solomon actually visited them. The islands later became a British protectorate and a major Second World War battleground, including Guadalcanal, before independence.
