Flag of Comoros

FLAG GUIDE

Flag of Comoros

Africa

Flag origins

The Comoros flag has yellow, white, red and blue horizontal stripes and a green triangle containing a white crescent and four stars. The stripes respectively represent Moheli, Mayotte, Anjouan and Grande Comore; the four stars also refer to those islands. Green and the crescent refer to Islam. The design belongs to the constitutional settlement of 2001.

Flag story

The Union of the Comoros actually administers three of those islands. Mayotte remained under French administration when the other islands became independent in 1975 and became a French department in 2011. Comoros continues to claim it. The four-island symbolism therefore expresses a territorial claim, not four islands all administered by the same government.
