FLAG GUIDE
Flag of Uzbekistan
Asia
Flag origins
Uzbekistan's flag has blue, white and green horizontal bands separated by narrow red lines, with a white crescent and twelve stars at upper hoist. Adopted on 18 November 1991, it officially associates blue with sky, water and historical tradition, white with peace and purity, green with nature and renewal, red with vitality, and the crescent with the birth of an independent republic. Twelve refers to historical traditions, calendars and completeness, not directly to twelve administrative provinces.
Flag story
The stars form rows of three, four and five. Despite the crescent-and-stars combination, the official explanation is broader than religion alone. The flag was adopted about two and a half months after the independence declaration of 31 August 1991, replacing the red Soviet republican flag with its hammer and sickle.
