FLAG GUIDE
Flag of Luxembourg
Europe
Flag origins
Luxembourg's flag has red, white and light-blue horizontal stripes. Its blue is deliberately lighter than the Netherlands' blue; government guidance specifies a sky-blue shade. The colors connect with the medieval arms of the Counts of Luxembourg, featuring a red lion against blue and white stripes. A 1972 law protects the national flag and arms.
Flag story
The lighter blue is a practical way to distinguish Luxembourg from the Netherlands. There are several accounts of the design's origins, and the countries also shared a monarch for much of the nineteenth century. Their similar flags should therefore be compared through shade and historical context rather than assumed to be identical.
