Flag of Slovenia

Europe

Flag origins

Slovenia's flag has white, blue and red horizontal bands with the coat of arms near the upper hoist, in a 1:2 ratio. The colors were used in the national movement by 1848. The arms show white Mount Triglav, two blue waves for sea and rivers, and three golden six-pointed stars from the Counts of Celje. The current design was approved on 24 June 1991 immediately before independence documents and ceremonies.

Flag story

Triglav is a real mountain, Slovenia's highest at 2,864 meters; its name means three heads, reflected in the stylized three peaks. The stars have six points rather than five. On 7 April 1848, Lovro Toman and fellow students raised the Slovenian tricolor in Ljubljana in response to a German flag on the castle; 7 April is commemorated as Flag Day.
