FLAG GUIDE

Flag of Serbia

Europe

Flag origins

Serbia's state flag has red, blue and white horizontal bands with the lesser coat of arms toward the hoist. The law also recognizes a plain national flag without arms. The crowned white double-headed eagle derives from Byzantine heraldic tradition; its breast shield bears a white cross and four firesteels. The symbols were restored to official use in 2004, followed by the 2006 Constitution, 2009 legislation and detailed design standards in 2010.

Flag story

Serbia's red, blue and white reverse the order of Russia's white, blue and red. The four shapes around the cross can look like the letter C and have later been associated with a Serbian motto, but their heraldic identity is firesteels rather than letters. The eagle, crown, shield and firesteels preserve medieval traditions within a modern flag.
