FLAG GUIDE
Flag of Venezuela
South America
Flag origins
Venezuela's flag has equal yellow, blue and red bands with eight white stars in an arc across the blue. Francisco de Miranda used the tricolor on his 1806 independence expedition; it became the basis of the 1811 national flag. The colors later passed through Gran Colombia, explaining their common use in Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador.
Flag story
The eighth star was added in 2006, but the idea was older. In 1817 Simon Bolivar ordered an eighth star to recognize liberated Guayana. Seven stars nevertheless became established for a long period. The 2006 change revived that earlier proposal rather than inventing an entirely new symbolic count.
