FLAG GUIDE
Flag of Cape Verde
Africa
Flag origins
Cabo Verde’s predominantly blue flag has white and red horizontal stripes and ten yellow stars in a circle. Government explanations associate blue with the surrounding sea and sky, white with the peace people desire, red with their effort in nation-building, and the ten stars with the ten islands. Their circle represents unity among islands and people.
Flag story
At independence from Portugal in 1975, Cabo Verde used a very different red-yellow-green flag resembling Guinea-Bissau’s. The National Assembly displays the 1975–1992 flag alongside the current one. The independence movements were closely connected, and there had even been plans for union between the two countries, explaining their shared colors and imagery. Following the transition to multiparty democracy, constitutional changes in 1992 introduced new national symbols and the present blue design. The government also notes the colors shared by the former flag and Guinea-Bissau’s.
