FLAG GUIDE

Flag of South Sudan

Africa

Flag origins

South Sudan's flag has black, red and green bands separated by white, a blue hoist triangle and a yellow star. Government teaching materials associate black with the people, white with peace, red with independence sacrifice, green with land and agriculture, blue with the Nile and the star with national direction. Based on the SPLM movement's flag, it became the flag of an independent state on 9 July 2011 after the peace agreement and referendum.

Flag story

South Sudan joined the UN as its 193rd member on 14 July 2011, only five days after independence, and raised its flag at UN headquarters that day. The 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement had ended the second civil war and begun a six-year transition. The flag therefore represents not only statehood but a long conflict and peace process.
