FLAG GUIDE
Flag of Zimbabwe
Africa
Flag origins
Zimbabwe's flag has green, yellow, red, black, red, yellow and green bands, with a white hoist triangle containing a red star and golden Zimbabwe Bird. Adopted on 18 April 1980, green represents agriculture, yellow mineral wealth, red independence sacrifice, black African people and white peace. The bird derives from stone sculptures found at Great Zimbabwe, which also gives the country its name.
Flag story
Actual carved birds survive from Great Zimbabwe, mounted originally on stone pillars. They are often interpreted as birds of prey, but their precise species and original meanings are not fully settled. Some were taken abroad during the colonial period and later returned. An archaeological object thus became a modern national emblem.
