FLAG GUIDE
Flag of Micronesia
Oceania
Flag origins
The Federated States of Micronesia has four white five-pointed stars on light blue. Blue represents the surrounding Pacific and the stars the four states: Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae. The law specifies four white stars arranged in a circle at the center of a blue field. The four-star flag was adopted on November 30, 1978.
Flag story
The earlier Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, administered by the United States for the United Nations, used six white stars for six districts. The regions later chose different paths. Palau and the Marshall Islands did not join the federation; Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae formed the present country. The flag consequently has four stars instead of six. The independent federation now has a Compact of Free Association with the United States. The US provides defense, and Micronesian citizens have special rights to migrate and work there. The currency is also the US dollar.
