FLAG GUIDE

Flag of Monaco

Europe

Flag origins

Monaco's flag has red above white, the historical colors of the Grimaldi family, whose connection with Monaco dates to Francois Grimaldi's capture of the fortress in 1297. Prince Charles III adopted the present flag in 1881. The red-and-white diamond pattern in the arms is a related but different heraldic design.

Flag story

Monaco and Indonesia have the same basic arrangement but different proportions: Monaco normally uses 4:5 and Indonesia 2:3. Their histories are separate; Indonesia's colors connect with local traditions including Majapahit. If both flags are stretched into identical image boxes, the most useful visible distinction disappears.
