Flag of Poland

Europe

Flag origins

Poland's flag has white above red. The colors derive primarily from heraldry: a white eagle on a red shield, also corresponding with the white knight and red field of historical Lithuania. White is placed above red because the emblem's color takes precedence over its background in heraldry. The national colors were formally established on 7 February 1831 during the November Uprising; the restored state approved the horizontal flag on 1 August 1919.

Flag story

Poland celebrates Flag Day on 2 May. The date recalls Polish soldiers raising the flag on Berlin's Victory Column on 2 May 1945. Under communist rule, flags displayed for May Day were removed before the unrecognized Constitution Day of 3 May. Since 2004, 2 May has instead been an official day to honor the flag.
