FLAG GUIDE
Flag of Rwanda
Africa
Flag origins
Rwanda's flag has a double-width light-blue upper band, yellow and green lower bands, and a golden twenty-four-rayed sun at upper fly. Adopted on 25 October 2001, blue represents happiness and peace, yellow economic development, green hope for prosperity, and the sun enlightenment, unity, transparency and the struggle against ignorance.
Flag story
The previous flag was a red, yellow and green vertical tricolor with a black R, used after independence in 1962. Following the 1994 genocide, artist Alphonse Kirimobenecyo designed a new national symbol. Official explanations say red was omitted because of its association with blood; the new palette emphasizes peace, hope and development.
