FLAG GUIDE

Flag of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

North America

Flag origins

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines' flag has blue, yellow and green vertical fields and three green diamonds in the broad yellow center. Adopted in October 1985 and called The Gems in government descriptions, it connects blue with sky and sea, yellow with sunlight, a bright spirit and golden beaches, and green with vegetation, agriculture and vitality. The diamonds evoke the gems of the Antilles and together form a V for Vincent.

Flag story

The 1979 independence flag used the same basic colors but had a coat of arms on a breadfruit leaf. Following political change in 1985, that complex emblem was replaced with the diamonds. They do not simply mean three islands; they express the many-island country's identity as gems, arranged into its initial.
