Flag of Senegal

Africa

Flag origins

Senegal's flag has green, yellow and red vertical bands and a green five-pointed star centrally. The presidency explains green through Islam, Christian hope and fertility in traditional religion; yellow through wealth, work, arts, literature and spiritual life; and red through life, sacrifice and determination to develop. The star expresses spiritual aspiration, the young republic's hope and openness to the world's five continents.

Flag story

Senegal and Mali briefly formed the Mali Federation and became independent in 1960 before separating that August. Their flags share green, yellow and red, but Senegal adds a green star. Guinea reverses the sequence to red, yellow and green. Star presence and color order are better clues than merely identifying Pan-African colors.
