FLAG GUIDE

Flag of Ghana

Africa

Flag origins

Ghana’s flag has red-gold-green horizontal bands and a central black five-pointed star. Designed by Ghanaian Theodosia Salome Okoh, it was adopted for independence on March 6, 1957. Red represents those who died for independence, gold mineral wealth, green forests and farmland, and the Black Star the lodestar of African freedom. The Pan-African colors were influenced by Ethiopia and subsequently adopted by many African states after Ghana’s independence.

Flag story

The Black Star symbolizes more than Ghana alone. Its independence in 1957 was an early achievement among colonized territories in sub-Saharan Africa and powerfully influenced other liberation movements. The star consequently represents African freedom and liberation, and the government continues to use Black Star as a cultural identity. The flag also changed briefly: the yellow band became white in 1964–1966, before the present colors returned in 1966.
