Flag of Viet Nam

Asia

Flag origins

Vietnam's flag has a red field and one large golden-yellow five-pointed star. Red recalls revolution and sacrifice for independence; the star expresses national and revolutionary unity. Government sources associate its five points with workers, peasants, soldiers, intellectuals and youth. Used for Ho Chi Minh's declaration of independence on 2 September 1945, its star was refined in 1955, and it became the reunified country's flag in 1976.

Flag story

The design's roots include the 1940 southern uprising against French rule, not just the later northern state. South Vietnam used a yellow flag with three red stripes during the war. After Saigon fell in 1975, the southern provisional revolutionary government initially used red above blue with a yellow star; the all-red field became nationwide with reunification in 1976.
