LEARNING GUIDE
How many colors does a flag use?
There is no single universal counting rule. We use the following conventions to keep the game’s answers consistent.
Look beyond the background
Clear additional colors in animals, leaves, tools and arms count. The four-or-more-colors question is not asking how many background stripes exist. Observe major colors recognizable at normal viewing size rather than magnifying every edge pixel.
Blue and light blue form one group
Dark blue and light blue are one registered group, even when both appear. Yellow and gold also form one group. The game’s count is not a count of paint colors or printing inks.
Brown is a separate group
Clearly brown trunks, buildings, animals and tools count as brown. Gray from a softened black outline or ordinary shading in yellow does not automatically add brown. Unclear details are checked against the flag image and source material.
What does not add a color
This is not a count of distinct RGB pixel values. Screen brightness and display settings can also affect appearance.
- Shades, gradients and light/dark versions of the same color.
- Antialiasing used to smooth image edges.
- Extremely fine outlines or blur caused by compression and resizing.
A useful observation sequence
These are this site’s classification rules, not a replacement for official national specifications. Report a suspected error with the country and detail.
- Record the broad field and stripe colors.
- Inspect emblems, animals and plants for clear additional colors.
- Group blue with light blue and yellow with gold.
- Exclude shading and outline-only differences, then count the groups.
