Flag of Cambodia

Asia

Flag origins

Cambodia's flag has blue, red and blue horizontal bands, with a double-width red center and a white image of Angkor Wat. Adopted in 1948 and restored with the monarchy in 1993, it associates blue with royalty, red with the nation and its people, and white with religion. The temple evokes the heritage of the twelfth-century Khmer civilization.

Flag story

Angkor Wat has survived many changes of regime and flag. The republic established in 1970 used a blue flag with a red temple canton and three stars; the Khmer Rouge and subsequent governments also retained temple imagery. The 1992–93 UN transitional flag instead showed a map and the country's name. In 1993, the monarchy restored the 1948 design after an absence of twenty-three years.
