FLAG GUIDE
Flag of Chad
Africa
Flag origins
Chad's flag has blue, yellow and red vertical bands. Adopted in 1959 before independence in 1960, it is commonly interpreted through blue for sky, hope, water and the south; yellow for sun, desert and the north; and red for progress, unity and independence sacrifice. Its arrangement combines the influence of the French tricolor with African color traditions.
Flag story
Chad and Romania both use blue, yellow and red vertical tricolors, despite separate histories. Chad's blue is usually darker, but screens and printed reproductions can make shade-based identification unreliable. They are best remembered as an exceptionally difficult pair rather than assumed always distinguishable by color alone.
