FLAG GUIDE
Flag of Romania
Europe
Flag origins
Romania's flag has equal blue, yellow and red vertical bands in a 2:3 ratio. The colors became national symbols during the nineteenth-century national movement, appeared in the revolution of 1848, and represented the union of Moldavia and Wallachia in 1859. Historical accounts connect red and blue with Moldavia and blue and yellow with Wallachia. The 1866 Constitution specified the national colors; the vertical arrangement subsequently became established.
Flag story
During the 1989 revolution, protesters cut the socialist coat of arms out of the yellow center instead of discarding the tricolor. Flags with a hole became symbols of opposition to Nicolae Ceausescu; surviving examples are preserved in museums. On 27 December 1989, the plain traditional tricolor was formally restored.
