FLAG GUIDE
Flag of Mongolia
Asia
Flag origins
Mongolia's flag has red, blue and red vertical bands and a golden Soyombo on the hoist band. The Constitution identifies blue as the eternal blue sky and red as progress and prosperity. The Soyombo, derived from the seventeenth-century script devised by Zanabazar, symbolizes freedom and independence. Its elements include flames for continuity and flourishing across past, present and future; sun and moon; triangles for defense and victory; horizontal bars for honesty and justice; a paired central figure for harmony; and upright bars for unity and strength.
Flag story
The socialist-era flag looked similar but included a golden star above the Soyombo. Democratic reform and the 1992 Constitution removed the socialist star while retaining the specifically Mongolian traditional emblem. A single Soyombo contains fire, sun, moon, triangles, rectangles and a harmony symbol, making it far more detailed than its silhouette suggests.
