Flag of El Salvador

FLAG GUIDE

Flag of El Salvador

North America

Flag origins

El Salvador's flag has blue, white and blue bands and a detailed coat of arms. Established by decree on 17 May 1912 and first officially raised on 15 September, the arms contain five volcanoes, two seas, a rainbow, a radiating red liberty cap, five flags and a triangle. The volcanoes represent the five historical Central American republics. The inscription includes the independence date, 15 September 1821, and the country's name in Central America.

Flag story

Its resemblance to Nicaragua and Honduras reflects a shared origin in the nineteenth-century Central American federation's blue-white-blue flag. The five volcanoes and five surrounding flags preserve that former union of Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. The design still communicates a history extending beyond the present country's borders.
