FLAG GUIDE

Flag origins
Georgia’s flag has a large red cross on white, with four smaller red crosses in its quarters: the Five Cross Flag. The law specifies the large central cross and four Bolnisi crosses. Its Christian character is strong, and government explanations associate it with the relationship between nation, church and people. The current flag was formally introduced on January 14, 2004.
Flag story
Although it looks modern, the design has medieval Georgian roots. After independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, it became a patriotic movement’s symbol before official adoption in 2004. The government describes its history as among the world’s oldest flag traditions. Interpreting the large cross as Christ and the four smaller ones as the Evangelists or the spread of Christian teaching is common, but these are religious-symbolic interpretations, not meanings specified by the flag law itself.
