Flag origins

Hungary’s flag has red-white-green horizontal bands. The Fundamental Law formally assigns strength to red, fidelity to white and hope to green. The colors derive from historical Hungarian arms and became established as a popular national symbol during the revolution and independence struggle of 1848. The government also identifies the April Laws of 1848 as formally recognizing the tricolour.

Flag story

During the 1956 uprising, flags with holes in their centers became revolutionary symbols. The socialist government’s coat of arms occupied the middle of the tricolour, and protesters cut it out, leaving the flag while removing the communist emblem. October 23 remains a national holiday commemorating the 1956 revolution and independence struggle, as specified in the Fundamental Law.
