FLAG GUIDE
Flag of Guyana
South America
Flag origins
Guyana’s flag has a green field, a large yellow arrowhead extending from the hoist and a red triangle inside it, giving the nickname Golden Arrowhead. Official meanings associate green with agriculture and forests, white with rivers and water resources, gold with minerals and forward progress, black with strength and endurance, and red with zeal and vitality in building the nation. It has been used since independence from Britain on May 26, 1966.
Flag story
The designer was American rather than Guyanese: Whitney Smith, the renowned flag scholar associated with popularizing the term vexillology. Government-related material also credits him. His proposal was adjusted before adoption in 1966. British heraldic authorities reportedly praised its innovation among contemporary flags. The arrowhead also relates to Indigenous culture, while its sharply forward-reaching shape expresses progress into the future.
