FLAG GUIDE
Flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis
North America
Flag origins
Saint Kitts and Nevis has green and red fields separated by a black diagonal band edged in gold, containing two white stars. The government's explanation assigns green to fertile land, red to the struggle against slavery and colonial rule, black to African heritage, gold to year-round sunshine, and the stars to hope and freedom—not simply to the two islands. Edrice Lewis designed the flag for independence on 19 September 1983.
Flag story
Nevis has its own government and assembly under the 1983 Constitution, which also provides a procedure for secession. The country's federal structure is therefore more distinctive than the simple fact that its name contains two islands. Remembering the official meaning of the stars avoids a tempting but misleading shortcut.
