FLAG GUIDE
Flag of Dominica
North America
Flag origins
Dominica’s flag has a green field, a yellow-black-white cross and a red central disc containing a bird with purple plumage, surrounded by ten green stars. Green represents forests; yellow the Indigenous Carib people, sun and crops; black people of African descent; white water and purity; and red social justice and national vitality. The bird is the Sisserou parrot, or Imperial Amazon, an endemic species and the national bird. The stars represent ten parishes.
Flag story
Dominica is one of the few national flags containing purple. It appears in the Sisserou’s plumage, and Dominica is often mentioned alongside Nicaragua as a flag with purple. The point is not that purple was selected as a separate symbolic national color: depicting the national bird brought purple onto the flag. Since this parrot lives only in Dominica, the central image represents a bird unique to the country, not merely decoration.
