FLAG GUIDE
Flag of Kosovo
Europe
Flag origins
Kosovo's flag has a blue field, golden map and six white stars in an arc. Adopted at the declaration of independence on 17 February 2008, it is defined as a symbol of the state and its identity. Designer Muhamer Ibrahimi explains blue as an aspiration toward Euro-Atlantic institutions and the stars as equal communities. Lists assigning a particular ethnic group to every star are common, but the designer's wording emphasizes equal communities.
Flag story
The design deliberately avoids identifying the state solely with its Albanian-majority population: Albania's black double-headed eagle was not used. A selection process involving political parties and minority communities produced map-and-stars imagery instead. Along with Cyprus, Kosovo is a clear example of a flag showing the country's own geographical outline.
