FLAG GUIDE

Flag of Mauritius

Africa

Flag origins

Mauritius has four equal horizontal bands: red, blue, yellow and green. First officially raised at independence on 12 March 1968, they represent the struggle for freedom, the surrounding Indian Ocean, the new light of independence, and agriculture and year-round greenery respectively. The simple four-band sequence is unusually distinctive.

Flag story

Known as Les Quatre Bandes, the flag replaced the Union Jack at the independence ceremony at Champ de Mars in Port Louis. In 2010 the government reiterated official color codes after noticing incorrectly colored flags at public buildings and events. Unlike the plain flag, the national arms contain a dodo, a sambar deer, sugar cane and palm trees.
