FLAG GUIDE

Flag of Moldova

Europe

Flag origins

Moldova's flag has blue, yellow and red vertical bands with the coat of arms in the yellow center. Adopted on 27 April 1990 while Moldova was still a Soviet republic, the colors connect with shared Romanian history. The arms show an eagle carrying a cross, olive branch and scepter, with an aurochs head, star, rose and crescent on its breast shield. These express historical identity, peace and sovereignty.

Flag story

Romania uses the same plain tricolor, so Moldova's arms are the essential identifying feature. The central animal is an aurochs, an extinct wild ox associated with medieval Moldavia. Moldova adopted the tricolor more than a year before declaring independence on 27 August 1991, replacing its Soviet-era flag.
