FLAG GUIDE
Flag of Morocco
Africa
Flag origins
Morocco's flag is red with a green outlined five-pointed star, commonly called the Seal of Solomon. Red is associated with the Alaouite monarchy, established in the seventeenth century; green has religious associations. Historical explanations distinguish red as temporal authority and green as religious symbolism. The star was added in 1915, and the flag remained in use after independence.
Flag story
An older plain-red flag needed a more distinctive identifying mark, which the green star supplied. Moroccan dynasties had used other colors earlier, including black under the Almoravids and white under the Almohads and later dynasties. Red is thus part of a particular royal history, not an unchanging color used by every Moroccan state.
