FLAG GUIDE

Flag of Nicaragua

North America

Flag origins

Nicaragua's flag has blue, white and blue bands with the coat of arms centrally. The law associates blue with justice and loyalty and white with purity and integrity. The triangular arms contain five volcanoes, two seas, a rainbow and a red Phrygian cap: equality, the five historical Central American republics, peace and freedom. The seas evoke the Pacific and Caribbean; the volcanoes do not simply count Nicaraguan volcanoes.

Flag story

The design preserves the ideal of the former Central American federation. Its inscriptions still read Republica de Nicaragua and America Central, and the 1908 legislation expressed hope for renewed political union. The rainbow is legally specified in seven colors, including violet, making Nicaragua a familiar example of a flag containing purple in its small central emblem.
