FLAG GUIDE

Flag of Peru

South America

Flag origins

Peru's ordinary national flag is a plain red, white and red vertical tricolor. The Constitution specifies that arrangement, and the Ministry of Culture associates red with patriotic sacrifice and white with freedom. The vertical arrangement developed in 1822; a coat of arms was added in 1825, but a 1950 change removed it from the flag for general use.

Flag story

San Martin's first flag of 1820 was diagonally quartered red and white with a rising sun and mountains centrally. Several changes followed in 1822. Peru distinguishes the plain national flag from state versions with arms. Those arms show a vicuna, a cinchona tree and a cornucopia of coins, representing animal, plant and mineral wealth; they should not automatically be counted as features of the plain flag.
