FLAG GUIDE

Flag of San Marino

Europe

Flag origins

San Marino's flag has white above light blue and the republic's arms centrally; a plain version is also used privately. The arms show Mount Titano and the three towers Guaita, Cesta and Montale, with white feather ornaments, oak and laurel branches, and the motto Libertas, Latin for freedom.

Flag story

San Marino describes itself as the oldest republic still maintaining independence and sovereignty. Tradition traces its foundation to the stoneworker Marinus establishing a community on Mount Titano in AD 301. The three towers are real surviving buildings, and the historic center and mountain became a World Heritage site in 2008. The foreign ministry also recounts sheltering around 100,000 refugees during the Second World War.
