Flag origins

The Republic of China flag used in Taiwan has a red field and blue canton containing a white twelve-rayed sun. Lu Haodong designed the blue-sky, white-sun precursor in 1893; Sun Yat-sen added the red field, and the Nationalist government formally established the design in 1928. Article 6 of the Constitution specifies it. Official explanations associate blue with brightness, purity and freedom; white with fairness and equality; and red with sacrifice and fraternity. Twelve rays refer to twelve months and the twelve traditional double-hours of a day.

Flag story

The flag was not the republic's original national flag in 1912. A horizontal five-color flag—red, yellow, blue, white and black—served that role, while the present design was used as a naval flag and by Sun's political movement. It became the national flag by law on 17 December 1928. After 1949, the Republic of China government continued using it in Taiwan.
