Flag of United States Virgin Islands

FLAG GUIDE

Flag of United States Virgin Islands

North America

Flag origins

The US Virgin Islands flag has a white field with a yellow bald eagle derived from the US arms, flanked by blue V and I. The eagle bears a shield, an olive branch for peace and three blue arrows for Saint Croix, Saint Thomas and Saint John. Adopted in 1921, it adapts US imagery with specifically Virgin Islands details rather than copying the Great Seal unchanged.

Flag story

The territory has its own Olympic team despite being part of the United States. Its committee was recognized in 1967 and first competed at the 1968 Mexico City Games. Sailor Peter Holmberg won its first Olympic medal, silver in the Finn class, at Seoul in 1988. The British and US Virgin Islands each have separate Olympic teams.
