FLAG GUIDE

Flag of Vanuatu

Oceania

Flag origins

Vanuatu's flag has red and green fields, a black hoist triangle and a black-edged yellow Y. In the triangle are a yellow boar's tusk and two namele leaves. Adopted at independence on 30 July 1980, it draws on the Vanuaaku Party flag. Red represents people's and pigs' blood, green natural wealth, black the people, and yellow the light of the Christian gospel. The Y echoes the islands' arrangement; the tusk conveys wealth and standing, and the leaves peace.

Flag story

Curving boar tusks were valuable possessions in traditional societies, where raising a boar with a large circular tusk could express wealth and social status. Pigs still play important roles in ceremonies and exchanges. The flag therefore depicts not a whole pig but a culturally valued tusk.
