FLAG GUIDE
Flag of Czechia
Europe
Flag origins
Czechia’s flag has white above red, with a blue triangle extending from the hoist to the center. White and red are traditional Bohemian heraldic colors. They formed the original bicolour used at Czechoslovak independence in 1918, but its resemblance to flags such as Poland’s led to the addition of Jaroslav Kursa’s blue triangle in 1920. Common interpretations link white with Bohemia and the sky, red with Moravia and blood shed for freedom, and blue with sovereignty and impartiality. In Czechoslovakia, blue also carried an association with Slovakia.
Flag story
This was originally Czechoslovakia’s flag. When the country peacefully divided into the Czech Republic and Slovak Republic in 1993, Czechia retained the design used since 1920. The Czech government also explains this inheritance. Slovakia instead adopted horizontal white-blue-red bands with its own coat of arms.
