FLAG GUIDE
Flag of Honduras
North America
Flag origins
Honduras’s flag has turquoise-white-turquoise horizontal bands and five turquoise five-pointed stars in the center. Current law specifies turquoise for the outer bands and stars. Blue is commonly interpreted as the Caribbean and Pacific, white as peace and purity, and the five stars as the former Central American federation’s five countries: Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica.
Flag story
The stars express not merely five territories but a hope of reunification. Although the federation dissolved in the first half of the nineteenth century, Honduras added the stars in 1866, preserving that ideal after the countries had separated. This common history also explains why Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua all use blue-white-blue: their designs descend from the old federal flag.
